This Custom home was designed after the client came to us wanting something built in the image of our own home. The spaciousness, open plan living and flow from inside to outside as well as the style and material selections. After the original concept was born we worked in conjunction with Atelier 41 Architecture and Natural Habitat Interiors and Design to finalise the design and selections.
The floor plan is created around an internal courtyard with entertainment area, sun deck, grassy area and pool complete with a stunning wet edge. The seamless flow from indoors to outdoors creates the perfect conditions for entertaining and outdoor living all year round. This design also ensures that the pool and courtyard are seen from all areas of the house merging the border between the interior and exterior.
From the moment you see the home, the entry lures you in through the stone pathway, bordered by the modern, white honed block work of the garage and the smooth timber cladding as well as the large, vertical, recycled bridge timbers incorporated into the fencing. It is this blend of clean contemporary lines mixed with natural elements and a hint of rustic that this home is built on. This balance creats a warmth necessary in turning any house into a home.
The environment is always at the forefront of every house design we do. In this design specifically, the floor plan of this home maximizes on the warmth of the morning sun in winter by inviting it into all rooms through the many large windows. This heats the burnished concrete floors, which slowly disperses throughout the day and night, minimizing if not avoiding completely the use of additional heating in the home. In summer the reverse is achieved simply in having large eaves to avoid direct sunlight entering the home and in turn the concrete stays cool. This floor plan is also great for catching the north easterly breezes which are the most effective source of natural cooling in our area in the hotter months.
Client Testimony – Matt Morrall: Nathan and Shelley are warm, friendly and very generous people. The design process was a lot of fun (generally discussed over a good red, or two!). Nathan is incredibly energetic and enthusiastic about the building process and has the ability to envisage the final product from a very early stage. Shelley has a wonderful gift for the aesthetic and her input was absolutely invaluable to the finished home. In addition, the entire team involved in the build were unbelievably generous with their expertise and ideas. Aran hit the design brief perfectly and the amazing ladies at Natural Habitat have made my house a pleasure to come home to. The whole process was enjoyable and a great collaboration of talents, driven by Nathan and Shelley.

In this case the client came to us with plans drawn up already by a local draftsman Peter Davies. Throughout the process they chose all their own selections and we assisted in adding a few “Niche” touches. Darren the client is quite a handy man and we were flexible enough to be able to cater for him making and installing his own timber bench tops and kitchen splash back.
A design feature of this home is our Niche custom designed staircase featuring blackbutt treads, mild steel stinger and balustrade finished with gun Blue.
The floor plan features open plan living on the lower level with burnished concrete floors throughout. With the second living space and bedrooms upstairs with beautiful blackbutt floorboards.
The second storey Deck looks out onto Moonee National park and the pacific ocean beyond.

Niche design were contacted about a major home renovation north of Coffs Harbour, The project outlined to Niche was to take a humble one bedroom loft style home and extended and renovate throughout to really maximise the properties potential and give greater indoor and outdoor living area’s .
The original home is almost unrecognisable today from this massive transformation, but still maintains the original charm. The client played a big part in expressing idea’s and input in getting a detailed plan together to go forth with this home extension.
Using natural materials and utilising existing structure we have managed to expose large living area’s that take advantage of natural light sources and really help to bring the outside spaces inside. This really makes for a very functional but also brings a warmth and relaxing vibe to this chilled out coastal village.

This Humble beach shack had already undergone an internal makeover and just needed an entertainment area to compliment it. This impressive deck almost doubling the size of the home.
The main purpose for the project was to be our family home and to become our home office – Niche Headquarters. We wanted an open plan design ideal for entertaining. Creating a home that is environmentally aware was also of high importance not just to reduce our carbon footprint, but also to be cost-effective and increase comfort and lifestyle. Secondary to this we wanted the home to push a few boundaries, showcasing new ideas and individuality so that we could use it as a showpiece and an example of our work to present to our clients.
The home has a very unique pavilion style floor plan, merging the borders between indoor and outdoor living. The pool in the internal courtyard is a visual feast from the moment you enter the house and continues to feature from all areas of the home. The layout leaves no room forgotten, each with a green, private outlook and capturing the sun in winter and the north easterly breezes of summer. Featuring layers of texture the home boasts an abundance of stone and timber creating an earthy, natural ambience equal to the light, open, contemporary feel.
This project has recently been awarded “Best Custom Home $6000,000 – $1 Mill” at the HIA awards 2014. You can check out the story the Coffs Coast Advocate ran here >>

Quality builder Coffs Harbour Nathan offers a great range of building services on The North Coast of New South Wales.
The owners of this home wanted to extend the existing small living space by adding an open plan living area and a master bedroom, whilst still maintaining the look and feel of the original 1920’s home.
Through careful planning and thoughtful design we managed to keep the beautiful integrity of the quality home. From working with existing roof pitches and utilising matching materials where possible beautiful restoration. Keeping things clean and simple but yet still modern has definitely not taken over from the charm this property brings.
